Tailings and Mine Waste Management. Challenges Competing factors such as cost, the environment, safety, and technical viability are at the forefront of thinking when today's mining organizations are investing in new tailings systems or retrofitting existing ones.
· By targeting highgrade, nearsurface gold reef deposits in the brownfield Pilgrims Rest and Sabie Gold Fields in South Africa, management plans .
Fines management – recover material for further use and minimise waste volumes. Primary Water Treatment – recover 90% of your process water for recirculation to your ore processing plant. Final Tailings Dewatering – the only waste product is now a filter cake with dry solids content of 80%, effectively eliminating the requirement for ...

· Gold mining is a major source of metal and metalloid emissions into the environment. Studies were carried out in Krugersdorp, South Africa, to evaluate the ecological and human health risks associated with exposure to metals and metalloids in mine tailings contaminated soils. Concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), .
Numerous studies completed in Africa, Australia and USA. Mineral exploration investment reviews for mining, private and public investors. Commodity experience includes gold, base metals (lead, zinc, copper, cobalt, nickel), platinum, bauxite, titanium, tin, BIF and itabirite iron ore, coal, graphite, rare earth elements, uranium, lithium potash brine systems and industrial minerals.
Tailings management in South Africa is regulated by law in the Guideline for the Compilation of a Mandatory Code of Practice on Mine Residue Deposits issued by the DME in 2000. This guideline makes implementation of a code of practice mandatory for each tailings facility with compulsory adherence to the SANS 10286, Code of Practice for Mine Residue Deposits (Anglo 2005).
Large quantities of tailings (approximately 70 million tonnes per annum) will be stored in an aboveground tailings storage facility (TSF). This report describes the design of the proposed tailings storage facilities in support of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and the commitments made therein associated with tailings management.
A blockflow diagram of a typical CIP plant for a nonrefractory gold ore is shown in Figure 2. Table I and Table II illustrate the capital and operating cost breakdowns for a typical South African gold plant. These figures are not a standard but reflect the nature of the ore and the design basis for a .
Dry tailings storage has received increased interest in the past few years as recent tailings dam failures shed the light on the risks associated with wet tailings management. ZebraTube® conducted a trial at gold processing plant in South Africa in order to establish dewatering efficiency using ZebraTube® geotextile dewatering tubes on gold tailings.
· This work investigated heavy metal and cyanide pollution in surface soils and edible plants around Yanzhuang gold tailings ponds in the region of Yanzhuang Village in Pinggu District, Beijing. Surface soil samples were collected from 33 sites around gold tailings ponds, and concentrations of seven heavy metals (, Sb, As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, and Hg) and cyanide were analyzed to determine .

Mining of minerals such as gold, copper, and platinum has been one of several activities sustaining the economy of South Africa. However, the mining sector has contributed significantly to environmental contamination through the improper disposal of mine tailings which covers vast areas of land. Therefore, this study utilised a vitrifiion process to manufacture glass from gold mine tailings.
· Similarly, tailings dumps arising from the processing of chrome ore in the Lower Group reefs of the BC are also being retreated to recover PGEs. Several commercially profitable enterprises have also been set up with the sole intention of retreating tailings dumps arising from South Africa's Witwatersrand gold processing operations.
Our Tailings Storage Facilities Policy (the TSF Policy) articulates the fundamental elements of our approach and commitment to the safe, responsible and sustainable management of our TSFs. It commits us to preventing TSF failures through designing, constructing, operating and closing our TSFs in a responsible manner.
